Word Work

I love word work. Consistent word work creates such a culture of reading in the classroom.

 

It's hard to see, but this student is writing her word wall words in Play-Doh using a toothpick.

 

 I found a tub of letters at school, the kids made a Boggle board out of them, searched for words, and recorded what they found. The list, in the picture, is the 600 high frequency words.

 

These students are working with Play-Doh, rainbow writing spelling words, word wall words, and the 600 high frequency words. 

 

This is the oil pan thing that my principal wanted me to do, and The Moffatt Girls blogged about.

We do word work for 30 minutes in the morning. I let them choose how they want to work with their words. THEY. LOVE. IT. And their reading has taken off!

Contractions!

This idea is all over Pinterest....but I first read about it at The First Grade Parade. {love that blog}

Today, we performed surgery....on words....we took two words, cut out a letter, bandaged them up, and ended up with a contraction!....THE KIDS LOVED IT!!! and I'm pretty sure the kiddos got the idea....After the words were all cleaned up and school was out, I was DETERMINED to re-create the stinkin' cute doctor that I saw on The First Grade Parade....so I looked at the picture and free-handed it... I can't believe it... but I love how it turned out....and I cannot draw...it took me probably an hour {or more} to draw, color, laminate and cut out... but the results were totally worth it to me! I want to publically say thank you Cara Carroll, whoever you are, for your darling, fun ideas that children love, and for sharing them with everyone...bless you :)

100th Day

 Well we made it to our 100th day! Everyone came to school dressed as a 100 year old...hilarious!

Most of what we did came from Deana Jump's 100 Day unit....I have to say the project that turned out the best was the 100 year old portraits. Everyone loved them.

 Those were all the pictures I took...the day went by so fast we couldn't get everything in!

Also, I wanted to include some of the idiom sheets we did last week. They turned out really cute and now the kiddos are always asking me if something is an idiom! You can get the idiom sheet we used here.

Math Journal Prompts

Since it is January, everything in our classroom is winter and arctic...well... I needed math journal prompts that were arctic and was going to buy some from TPT and then figured... WHY?! So I made some and you can get them here. Also, the font I used was "My Third Grade Teacher" but I can't remember where I got it.

Phonics Review

This week our spelling list is a review of past phonics rules. Below are some worksheets I made to help the kiddos with the review. You can click on them to download.

The FLOSS rule
1. The word must be one syllable.
2. The word must end in F, L, or S.
3. The word must contain a short vowel.

THEN we can double the ending consonant .... F, L, or S!

I did make a worksheet where the students choose the correct spelling between ck or k....but I can't find it and I have to go meet hubby for THAT football game... grrr :)

I was on Pinterest this morning and found a pin about idioms that linked to ReadLearnTeachLife. I loved it! There was not a download for the cute worksheet; so I made one.... you can download it here. 

We will read this book about idioms Why The Banana Split. Hilarious!
